Sam Basford

Pickleball Initiation and Tournament Leadership

Sam Basford, 23, first started playing pickleball in September 2016, following his successful stint in regional table tennis. He went to the University of Nottingham, where alongside colleague Karen Mitchell, he organised and ran the first edition of the English Open Pickleball Tournament. This was followed by the 2021 English Nationals and most recently, the 2022 English Open.

Accountancy to Pickleball Passion: SB Pickleball’s Inception

Sam’s degree is in Accountancy, and having worked for PwC for a while, he soon figured that pickleball was what he was meant to do! In 2022, Sam decided to launch SB Pickleball, a company aimed at providing opportunities for players to access coaching, coach education and pickleball events across the country.

Teaching Excellence and Mission for Growth

Sam regularly teaches clinics, lessons and coached play sessions across the country, and is known for his patient and methodical teaching style, with a little bit of fun thrown in! He has helped hundreds of players across the UK develop their technique and gameplay and is on a mission to make that many more! Sam loves getting to know his students and enjoys having a good time with them on and off the court!

When Sam isn’t teaching or running events, you can find him watching his beloved Aston Villa, or travelling and seeing the world!
